Scholarship Program
A Message on our Chapter Scholarship
Helen Adler, Chairwoman
The Central Florida Chapter established a scholarship fund to help defray the cost of tuition for a Central Florida area Penn State student. We have made a commitment to fund our scholarship, so this year more than ever before we need your help and support.
This year we received four scholarship applications and we will be awarding one scholarship of $2,500 thanks to the generosity of Don Desjardins who contributed over $500 to our fund. This year’s scholarship is named in honor of Lisa, Jackson and Don Desjardins.
We would like to increase both the number of annual scholarship awards as well as the amount of the annual scholarship. Please help us. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to the scholarship fund, please visit our website or mail in a check with your annual dues. Please help us if you can! Thank you for your generosity!
If you are interesting in volunteering for the scholarship committee or have a fundraising idea, please contact Helen Adler, Committee Chair at Helen.Adler@honeywell.com.
2010 Desjardins Scholarship Award
John Burna
After receiving four scholarship applications, our members voted to award
this year’s Chapter scholarship to senior, John Burna.
John attends the University Park campus, is majoring in Business Management and has an overall GPA of 3.4. John spends much of his time involved with the Nittany Lion Battalion Army ROTC and running club (where he has competed in several marathons). He has been in the color guard for many PSU football and basketball games as well as other remembrance ceremonies. John was also a Resident Assistant in Packer Hall. John plans to begin his career in the United States Army upon graduation in 2011.
Please consider donating to our scholarship fund so that local PSU students like John can continue to benefit from our Chapter's generous members. Go to the Chapter Store to make a donation via credit card or PayPal.
About the Central Florida Chapter Scholarship
The Central Florida Chapter has established a scholarship fund to help defray the cost of tuition for a selected Central Florida area Penn State student. The Scholarship Committee is in the process of sending out applications to eligible area students.
The Central Florida Chapter awards one scholarship each year to a returning Penn State student from the Central Florida Chapter’s geographical area. The student can be attending any campus and should have completed his or her freshman year. The amount of the scholarship is currently $1,000 annually, provided the Chapter has the necessary funds.
The criteria for eligibility are:
- Returning sophomore, junior, or senior (completed freshman year)
- Must be a full-time student
- Attend any one of Penn State’s campuses
- Must reside in Chapter’s service area and have a permanent Central Florida mailing address
In order to participate, the students will be asked that they tell us about themselves, including all of the following points, in an essay of no more than 2000 words.
- What do you feel distinguishes you from the others who are applying for this scholarship?
- What impact do you think your Penn State education will have on the rest of your life?
- Describe your extracurricular activities and your reasons for choosing them.
- Describe your most memorable moment at Penn State. Tell us about your greatest accomplishment.
